Gordon Brown BVM&S CertSAO MRCVS (Orthopaedic Surgeon/Referral Director)

Gordon graduated from Edinburgh University in 1984. He joined the practice in 1986 and founded the orthopaedic referral practice in 1997 with Simon Gilbert. He is now a referral director at the Grove. Gordon’s area of expertise is in the diagnosis and treatment of small animal orthopaedics and spinal injuries. In 1994 he gained his certificate in small animal orthopaedics (an examination set by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons) and was awarded the Leslie Vaughan prize.

Outside the practice Gordon is a family man, married to Sarah and they have 3 children. The Brown family is completed by 3 dogs – Milly, Archie and Badger and a cat called Jazz.

Simon Gilbert MA VetMB, CertSAO, MRCVS (Orthopaedic Surgeon/Referral Director)

Simon graduated from Queens College, Cambridge University in 1988. He joined the practice in 1994 and founded the orthopaedic referral practice with Gordon Brown. Simon’s area of expertise is in the diagnosis and treatment of small animal orthopaedics and spinal injuries. He gained his Certificate in Veterinary Radiology in 1991 and Certificate in Small Animal Orthopaedics in 1994. Both are examinations set by the Royal College of Vet. Surgeons. Together with Gordon, he runs the practices’ orthopaedic and spinal referral practice as “Referral Director”. Simon is married to Jane, also a vet who works part-time at the Dereham practice. They have a family of 3 children, a Labrador called Pippa, a Norfolk terrier called Lottie and 2 rabbits.

James Tattersall BVSc, BSc, CertSAS, DiplECVS, MRCVS (Orthopaedic & Soft Tissue Surgeon)

James graduated from the University of Liverpool in 2000. He won the 2000 RCVS Fitzwygram prize; awarded to the most academically outstanding student from UK veterinary schools. After a year in small animal practice, he went on to complete an internship in small animal medicine and surgery, followed by a residency in small animal surgery (CertSAS) in 2003.

He was appointed lecturer in small animal orthopaedics at the University of Edinburgh in 2004 and became a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons (ECVS) in 2006. James left the University to join The Grove Veterinary Orthopaedic Referrals in January 2007.

James is married to Liz and has 2 young children.

Lorraine Fleming BVetMed, CertVOphthal, MRCVS

Lorraine qualified from the Royal Veterinary College in 1990 and stayed on for a year as a Houseman in small animal medicine and surgery. Following this she went to the University of Bristol veterinary school to be the Duphar Feline Fellow.

In 1993 she went to the Animal Health Trust in Newmarket to begin her career in veterinary ophthalmology. She gained her RCVS Certificate in 1994 while working as part of the Comparative Ophthalmology Unit at the Trust. She left the Trust in 2003 having completed 10 years of both clinical and research work. She was awarded a Fellowship by the Institute of Ophthalmology in London in 2003 for her work on corneal wound healing.

Lorraine has been teaching ophthalmology to vets for 12 years and has now also started teaching in Europe. Lorraine embarked on an independent referral service in 2005. Lorraine is working hard towards her RCVS Diploma and is hoping to take the exam in 2009.

At home Lorraine has 2 young children, 6 dogs, 1 cat and 2 ferrets. Family life is hectic but great fun and Lorraine is very happy to share it with her fantastic husband Steve.

Jane Gilbert MA VetMB, MRCVS

Jane graduated from Queen’s College, Cambridge University in 1987. She joined the practice in 1996 as a part-time assistant. Jane’s area of interest is in companion animal medicine and surgery. She works part time in the practice and is married to Simon, one of the Referral surgeons.

Jane has a busy life divided between the practice and a family of 3 children, a Labrador called Pippa, Norfolk terrier called Lottie and 2 pet rabbits!

Colin Houston BVM&S, MRCVS

Colin graduated from Edinburgh University in 1999. He spent 6 years working in a mixed practice before joining the Grove in 2005. He gained the European School of Post Graduate Veterinary studies Certificate in small animal surgery GP Cert (SAS) in 2007 and the RCVS Certificate in small animal surgery (Cert SAS) in 2009.

Out of work Colin enjoys sailing, hill walking and skiing. He is married to Catherine, who is also a vet at the practice, and they have a young son Finn.

Catherine Houston BVM&S, MRCVS

Catherine graduated from Edinburgh University in 1999. Since then she has worked in small animal practices in the UK, Australia and New Zealand.

Catherine is interested in all aspects of small animal practice but has a particular interest in small animal medicine. In her spare time she enjoys spending time with her family and outdoor pursuits such as mountain biking, climbing and skiing.

Alan Hughes BVSc, MRCVS (Clinical Director of Primary Services)

Alan qualified from Bristol University in 1979, and after positions in Yorkshire and North London, moved to Stevenage in Hertfordshire where he became the managing partner of a busy small animal practice.

After 24 years there, Alan and his family decided to move to North Norfolk, an area they had grown to love through holidays and bird-watching trips. He joined the Grove Veterinary Group in September 2008 as a Clinical Director with the responsibility for the primary care side of the practice. His professional interests include ophthalmology, veterinary nursing and practice management. He lives in a local village with his wife, their youngest daughter and a variety of pets.

When work and family commitments allow, his interest is in bird-watching along the beautiful North Norfolk coast.

Kate Jewson BSc Hons, MA VetMB, MRCVS

Kate joined the Grove in May 2008 after a 6 year stint in Cumbria and then in Suffolk. Special interests for her, reside in small animal medicine, particularly Oncology.

Kate returned to Norfolk to practice in the county she was born and bred in, and still has a large family contingency locally. She has a beautiful German short-haired pointer at home and they spend a lot of the time exploring the Norfolk coastline and countryside.

Kate also tries to find time for other pursuits such as riding and skiing.

Simon Vogel BVSc, MRCVS

Simon graduated in 1996 from Liverpool and worked in a mixed practice on the Welsh borders, before returning to Norfolk, initially joining the practice in 1998.

He is married with two children, who have rarely stopped his travels, and still lives in Dereham where he spends most of his time.

Sarah James BSc BVetMed MRCVS

Sarah graduated from the Royal Veterinary College, London in 2006. Since then she has worked in Companion animal practice in Leicestershire and Kent before settling in Norfolk near family. She has a broad scope of veterinary interests particularly medicine and behaviour.

Outside of work she lives with her partner Ian and their two dogs Bramble, the Border Terrier and Archie the Munsterlander. In her free time, when not renovating their house, she enjoys activities from running and long walks with the dogs to skiing and sailing.

Steve McReady BVSc (Syd.) MRCVS

Steve graduated from Sydney University, Australia. Steve is our regular locum vet, and is often seen in our clinics covering when one of us is away from the surgery. Steve has worked for many practices in the area and has a wealth of general practice experience, at home and abroad! He lives in Norwich with his Bull Terrier “Wombat”!
